Something Old in Something New

Whitewashed Storage Cupboard
43" x 104" x 16"

This piece is the perfect blend of old and new.  The distressed two door cupboard features antique doors with original glass that have been retrofitted into a new whitewashed cupboard and lower storage cabinet.  I especially love the use of the original hardware on the doors adding great character to a piece that is already such a statement.  I see this in your country kitchen with a collection of Provencal pottery or in your city pad with showcasing your treasured scavenger finds.

Your Ticket to the Emerald City

Vintage Glass Storage Container
circa 1930

14"H x 7"D

This vintage storage container is the perfect holiday gift for that special someone in your life.  This one of a kind piece has hand applied glass grips and a glass lid.  The deep green color and overall shape of the piece has an art deco flair that would work perfectly in a modern day kitchen. I also see this piece living on your McCobb bookcase next to your collection of records.

Small Spaces Demand Transitional Pieces

Studio Tripod Table Lamp
designed by Thomas O'Brien for Visual Comfort
available in bronze, polished nickel and hand rubbed antique brass20"W x 32"-57"H

This lamp is a great addition to any space, the industrial design of this piece is reminiscent of the Constructivists movement of the 1920's.  The adjustable nature of the lamp and the exposure of its moving parts creates a sculptural harmony that is often hidden in modern day lighting.  I like that the lamp can live in many places in your home, as a focal point in a modern loft or a pair of them on a console flanking your favorite surrealist painting.

Every Occasion is a Special Occasion

MATCH Pewter Round Tureen
 9.8D x 9.3H

I love this company!  Match continues ancient tradition using methods that have been passed down through generations of Italian artisans.  The hallmarks on each piece are the signatures of their skilled hands.  A 95 is stamped on each piece to represent the 95% highest quality tin used in each piece.  Each piece of match pewter is a testament to the timeless values of craft and authorship often overlooked in this age of speed and convenience.  The classic forms harmonize with both traditional and modern settings.  AERO has several pieces in the gallery from the line, please let me know if there is anything you are looking for and I will see what I can do to get your collection started!

Happy Thanksgiving All!

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough, and more.  It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.  Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.  ~Melody Beattie

Please have a safe and happy holiday!

An Eye For Entertaining

Pewter Owl Pitcher
9.25" x 6"

Your guests will hoot with delight when you serve with this charming Harvest Owl Pitcher.  Big, bright copper eyes are the defining feature of this curious creature cast in whimsically detailed pewter.  The sturdy, graceful handle has a feathered finish; the gracefully curved pitcher body is finished with a combination of high polish and subtle brushing.

This pitcher was inspired by the beauty of copper eyed, North American Barred Owls, known to most as hoot owls.  Owls are a symbol of wisdom around the world; I believe it is a wise host indeed who chooses to serve with the Harvest Owl Pitcher.

Buying Mid-Century? Buy American!

Harvey Probber Side Table
circa 1950

22.5" x 19.75" x 20.75"

Designed by world renowned American furniture designer Harvey Probber this side table is a great example of his elegant and innovative style.  The clean lines of the piece and the two tone outlining detail on the single drawer help to enforce the strong mid century design.  Finished in a greywash the piece also features a cane shelf for extra storage.  This piece has a very modular quality that I feel can work well in most any situation.

Beautifully Appointed Barware

Darby Collection, DOF
designed by Thomas O'Brien for Reed & Barton
set of 4
Darby Collection, Highball
designed by Thomas O'Brien for Reed & Barton
Set of 4

Darby barware is an extensive family on a chord of retro, clubby luxury. This crystal is distinguished by its incredible weight and soul, with tailored horizontal cross-cutting over deep paneled and scalloped vertical cuts, evoking something of a plaid design. A classic star-cut pattern on the bottom of each glass adds perfect refraction and tradition. Set of 4.

Vintage Luxury In A Modern World

Contoured Barrel Back Settee

50" x 33" x 22.5"
Seat height: 18"
shown in wine velvet, circa 1940 in the manner of Edward Wormley

This vintage settee is a perfect example of the transition of the center of the art world from Paris to New York that occurred in the 40's.  Like so many pieces of the time, the slightly curved shape and plush velvet offer a romantic escape from the pulls of urban living.  The smaller footprint of the piece makes it easily able to be called home in a variety of spaces.

Small Jonathan Table Lamp
by Thomas O'Brien for Visual Comfort

Height: 20"
Width: 8"
Base: 4½"
Available Finishes: Alabaster, Crystal(shown), Hand Rubbed Antique Brass, Quartz, Sheffield Silver
Shade Details: 7" x 8" x 8½" NP
Socket: Hi-Lo
Wattage: 75 A

$375.00 each

As part of our new lighting collection for Visual Comfort, Thomas informed me that he has named a fixture after me!  Despite the obvious reason for this being a must-have lamp, I am especially fond of the traditional form made modern through the choice of materials.  I was lucky enough to see it in person when we were down in High Point for Market and not only was this lamp featured but the entire new line was there to view.  Stay tuned for more new pieces from the line, and be the first of your friends to own this lamp!

AERO Essentials: Number 3 of 5

Hallings Secretary
by Thomas O'Brien for Hickory Chair

39" x 20.5" x 71.75"
Standard Antique Ivory Finish with interior Classic Finish

As striking open as it is closed, the spare lines of this sophisticated secretary recall the chic style of a 1940’s French design. The understated case is raised by a subtle saber leg, topped by a discreet hinged compartment and finished standard in Antique Ivory. The secretary’s interior is executed in richly toned kingwood with a Classic finish interior and is outfitted with a variety of drawers, round ring pulls, Hepplewhite knobs and a leather-insert desktop.

If you are looking to achieve the classically modern look of a Thomas O'Brien room this piece is definitely an essential!

Soaring With Style

Canvas Travel Bag
14" x 15" x 7"

This bag is screaming for a weekend vacation!  Dating back to 1970, the bag is constructed of laminated canvas and brown leather with a red and maize horizontal band.  The bag is in great condition and is a must have for any jet setter!  It reminds of a time when traveling whether it be to Pittsburgh or Paris was such a luxury.

Aluminum Candy Dish
16" x 12" x 2"

This vintage candy dish circa 1950 is amazing!  Made of solid aluminum the dish consists of three leaves that braid into a stem handle.  This dish is the perfect vessel for sweets at your harvest feast and even has a sculptural quality that can be the crowning jewel on your Saarinen coffee table.

Game Night Gets Chic

Vintage Concave                  Card Table
39" x 39" x 29"

This table from the 1950's has folding iron hairpin legs and features hand tooled and pierced butterscotch leather.  I love that it can be used as an everyday table or folded away for storage in a city where every inch of square footage counts!

Bar None? Bar DONE!

I love this pair of vintage barstools, the harmony between the structured iron frame and the variegated leather creates an interesting seating option for your space.  The simple barrel-back offers a touch of support without taking up too much visual weight.  I see these used  in a few settings, obviously as your traditional barstools but also as extra seating while entertaining guests from your park view terrace.

Carlo Table Lamp
designed by Thomas O'Brien for Visual Comfort
shown in Hand Rubbed Antique Brass and Bronze

Part of our newest collection for Visual Comfort, the Carlo Lamp is reminiscent of the space age 1950's but appropriately modernized with sophisticated finishes and a touch of modern glamour.  I see a pair of these on vintage Gibbings nightstands in a master bedroom or a single conversation piece at your studio desk.  The lamp is also avaiable in polished nickel, hand rubbed antique brass and polished nickel with antique white.

A Personal Touch Meets A Touch Of Personal

Handprint Portraits
artist: Gary Schneider

Please contact AERO for pricing 212-966-1500

I have had the pleasure of meeting Gary and he is a truly fascinating guy, a native South African he began working in the early nineties on what would become his signature.  Gary describes his work by the following:
"These photographs, made without a camera, are sweat and heat imprints onto film emulsion. I consider handprint portraits to be as expressive as any of a face, more private, and possibly more revealing. They do not reveal race and, often, neither gender nor age"

His work is truly unique and personal, no two portraits are ever the same, I highly recommend making room on your walls for one of his pieces!

Don't Worry, Be...

Happy Bowl
by Caleb Siemon
Large: 5.5"H x 8"W

This piece is sure to put you in a good mood!  Reminiscent of another era, this piece plays with the reflective and malleable qualities of glass. Heavy thick-walled pieces are hand manipulated to create a creased and singularly individual form for each piece. The vessel is either blown in solid clear glass or use the Italian technique of "sommerso" or encased in color. Designed by Caleb Siemon. Made in California. Signed.

A Cure for the Back to School Blues

Vintage Rattan Desk
by Tommi Parzinger for Willow & Reed
54" x 30.25" x 29"

It is that time of year again, a farewell to summer and the start of a new school year.  What better way to kick of the year than with a new desk!  This vintage Parzinger piece is perfectly appointed with a leather clad top and contrast stitching.  The desk features two front drawers with hand rubbed antique brass handles.  I am especially fond of the contrast between the clean stitched top and the less formal rattan base.  This piece is a bit of an investment but well worth every penny!

This Lamp Hits The Spot.

Cinema Light
30.25" x 30.25" x 62.25"

Form follows function in this entirely practical light that condenses and magnifies a fierce beam towards the stage. Or in our case, more probably a painting or an easy club fauteuil. Handcrafted in vintage airplane aluminum and polished by hand, he light is easy to adjust and point.  The spot is attached to a folding aluminum tripod. It’s all in the detail...

AERO Essentials: Number 2 of 5

AERO Leather Utility Bag
available in various colors
24"l x 10"w x 14"h

An AERO exclusive, this carry all bag definitely deserves a spot on the Essential List!  The bag is made from high quality vegetal-dyed Italian leather with a thick color contrasting cotton strap.  This was my first purchase from Aero when I started and I take it with me everywhere.  Whether it be perusing through the Chelsea flea markets to hold found treasures or to quickly throw in a few items and over your shoulder for an impromptu Sunday beach trip this bag is the perfect companion.  Not bulky like other bags of its size the AERO Utility Bag can be easily folded down for storage when not in use...but trust me that will rarely happen!

Not An Idea To Table

Demilune Console
42.5" x 22 x 32.5"

The vintage white finish of this table makes it perfect for a beach cottage or paint it Charleston green for a more structured look.  I love the geometric shapes the exposed stretcher base creates.  A pair back to back could be an interesting solution for an entry hall overflowing with potted giant elephant ears.

Take Me Home Tonight

Woven Alpaca Duffel Bag
16"h x 16"w x 6"d

I am sort of obsessed with this bag right now!  It makes me want to ransack my beach drawer and take the Long Island Railroad all the way to the end, destination Montauk.  The bag is natural and brown woven alpaca with leather accents and an old fashioned button closure.  Originally from Argentina it has made the voyage to NYC.  Who is ready to take it on their next trip?

Get Your Signed Copy Today!

American Modern
by Thomas O'Brien
$50.00, signed copy

American Modern is an inspiring design volume that will redefine the way you think about modern interiors.  Not only should you buy one for your library but this is the perfect gift for any design oriented friend.
Below is a partial editorial review of the book that I can't help but completely agree with!

Designer and merchant, collector and tastemaker, Thomas O’Brien has made a career of translating cool notions of modernism into an easy and generous array of modern styles that anyone can attain. Now he introduces readers to a range of those styles—from casual to formal, vintage to urban—alongside stunning photography and charming design stories.  Important design principles such as architectural authenticity, color relationships, correctness of scale, and informed collecting are threaded through a practical narrative that reads like a master class in interior design.
